Over 1000 Shropshire Apprenticeships could be generated

October 1, 2016 by Julie McGrath

A £2.8 million project aimed at creating thousands of new apprenticeships has been launched in Shropshire.

The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership is in the final stages of talks with three bidders to develop Advanced Manufacturing Hubs in three locations around the Marches, which covers Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Herefordshire.

The training centres would support employers in parts of the region where there is limited access to workforce training. The first is expected to open on Bridgnorth’s Stanmore Industrial Estate.

The largest contract, worth more than £1.9m, is led by four partners – Shropshire employers Grainger & Worrall, Classic Motor Cars Ltd and Salop Design & Engineering and training specialist In-Comm Training.

The consortium intends to develop the Marches Institute of Manufacturing and Technology which will deliver training in Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury and aims to create 1,913 apprenticeships.

It would also support 416 businesses and nearly 1,000 bite-sized training courses.

Graham Wynn, chairman of the Marches LEP, said: “Additional capital investment is needed to support the manufacturing sector to develop their skills base, equipping them to maximise future opportunities.

“I am delighted that manufacturing employers have responded to our call for them to take the lead in developing how the skills needs of their workforce can be addressed.

“As a result, we are in the final throes of negotiations to award three contracts to consortiums with numerous private sector employers.

“The first hub to be developed will be at a site in Bridgnorth, and we expect to be able to announce details of the other two training hubs in the coming weeks.”

Matthew Snelson, director at Grainger and Worrall, said: “We are delighted and excited to be part of the consortium of companies who are forming the Marches Institute of Manufacturing and Technology.

“Our objective is to develop engineers of the future, both as apprentices and in our existing workforces. The Institute will support companies large and small across our region, to become more productive, more competitive, and support sustainable growth”.

The training centres are due to open in 2017. Funding for the project was awarded to the LEP via its initial Growth Deal for capital skills projects.

Growth Deals are awarded to LEPs through a competitive bidding process to fund the delivery of projects to boost the local economy.

“The Marches Institute of Manufacturing and Technology is a major step forward for skills provision in the area and gives employers much-needed access to specialist training and state-of-the-art facilities,” added Gareth Jones, managing director of In-Comm Training.

“Industry, and the automotive sector in particular, has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years and we need to ensure we are taking action now to upskill existing members of staff and, importantly, create a pipeline of new engineers to support ambitious expansion plans.”

“It’s time that we reshored provision back to Shropshire and gave firms access to the best employee development opportunities on their doorstep.”

Could more Shropshire Jobs be on the way?

September 5, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Could more Shropshire Jobs be on the way at the i54 site whilst mystery firm eyes development over Shropshire border?

Scores of new Shropshire Jobs could be on the way after a mystery hi-tech manufacturing company put in an offer for a new factory on the i54 development site, on the Shropshire border.

Talks are “at an advanced stage”, said Noel Muscutt of property agents Bulleys.

“We are hoping to make an announcement fairly shortly,” he said.

If a deal for the site was agreed it would be “very good news for the area indeed”, Mr Muscutt added.

Details are currently being kept confidential while talks continue, but it would involve an advanced manufacturing company from outside the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire area creating Shropshire jobs.

Mr Muscutt said there had been very strong interest in the 15.5-acre site, close to the growing Jaguar Land Rover engine factory, since it went on the market late last year.

The site is one of the last patches of development land left on the 239-acre South Staffordshire i54 site, which is also home of aerospace factory Moog, testing firm Eurofins and stamp printer ISP.

The site is jointly owned by Wolverhampton Council, South Staffordshire Council and Staffordshire County Council. Last year they called in Halesowen-based industrial estate operator A & J Mucklow to develop and find tenants or buyers for the remaining plots.

It is proposing three advanced manufacturing factories for the 15 acres, of 40,800 sq ft, 74,800 sq ft and 160,000 sq ft. Bulleys and Cushman & Wakefield are the joint letting agents.

Mr Muscutt, from Bulleys, said the proposals were “very much indicative of how the site could look”, rather than concrete plans.

The actual factories will be built to the specifications of the manufacturing companies that move on to the site.

When Mucklow was brought in by the councils last year the company chairman, Rupert Mucklow, said: “We won’t be involved in speculative development. We will hope to attract companies looking for high quality industrial space, something bespoke, and working with them to develop buildings that fit their needs.”

The i54 site is already seeing major development work as JLR expands its engine plant, turning it into a £1 billion factory. It already makes four cylinder Ingenium diesel engines and production of petrol engines is due to start later this year.

A further project is almost doubling the size of the factory, which will extend from the M54 to the north to the Wobaston Road to the south. Building work is expected to be completed by next summer.

Shrewsbury Development will see 400 new Shropshire Jobs

August 24, 2016 by Julie McGrath

400 new Shropshire Jobs will be created following development plan by major food company ABP.

More than 400 Shropshire Jobs are to be created by food giant ABP, with a £20 million investment at its operation in Shrewsbury.

The redevelopment of its site in Harlescott is the company’s latest vote of confidence in Shropshire.

Last year ABP completed a £30 million overhaul of its site at Hordley near Ellesmere.

ABP is already one of the biggest private sector employers in Shropshire, with 732 staff at the Battlefield Enterprise Park in Shrewsbury and more than 725 at Ellesmere. The new additions would take its total workforce to almost 1,900 in Shropshire.

ABP said there will also be a significant number of construction jobs generated during the project.

Its county operations supply beef to major customers across the country, with Sainsbury’s a key contract for the company.

The latest proposal is for a new retail meat packing building that ABP said will improve the existing Shrewsbury plant.

The new building will also include a dry goods store, employee amenities, canteen facilities and administration and staff offices.

But director Seamus Banim sounded one note of caution over the impact of Brexit on farmers in the UK.

“The vast majority of cattle coming to ABP Shrewsbury is sourced from farms within a 50-mile radius and it is our hope that this supply of quality British cattle will not be impacted in a post Brexit non CAP era,” he said.

A planning application for the development is expected to be made public in the next few days.

Councillor Malcolm Price, Shropshire Council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “The comments we have received so far have mostly been positive. When it is completed it will be one of the most modern and efficient packing plants in Europe. All the equipment will be brand new, state-of-the-art.

“The good thing about the company is all the meat that goes into the site comes from within 50 miles of Shrewsbury.

“This is a major investment for Shropshire. It is significant employment and economic investment.

“In 15 years of being a councillor I have never heard a complaint against ABP. They are a very professional and well-run company. They have a great reputation.”

Over 1000 New Shropshire Jobs to be created in £50 million project

August 19, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Plans for a one million sq ft major warehousing and logistics development near the Shropshire border could bring 1,500 new Shropshire Jobs

1,500 New Shropshire Jobs could be generated should plans for a multi million pound warehousing and logistics development building be approved.

One unnamed component manufacturing company has already signed a deal with property investment company Tritax Big Box to take a 543,000 sq ft unit on the site before it is even built.

If the plan gets the green light from South Staffordshire Council, Tritax will then lend developer Bericote £56.3 million to build the logistics and headquarters building.

It is the first of four large warehousing facilities proposed for the site by Bericote, north of the M54 near Brewood.

Together they would cover 1.1 million sq ft and could provide Shropshire jobs for more than 1,500 people, says the developer.

Bericote has submitted a detailed planning application for the four buildings on 63 acres of land off Gravelly Way, in Four Ashes, part of which used to be a chemical works.

The proposals have had a cautious reception from Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy, who said: “We need to see the details on this but in principle I am in favour of anything creating this number of jobs.

“Brownfield sites are something I want to see developed and used for employment purposes.

“In South Staffordshire, we don’t want to see continuance between the West Midlands conurbation and Stafford. It is vital we have green land there.

“But I will always support development on brownfield land.”

Work has already been carried out on traffic controlled access and road widening for the site as part of the £82.2 million Staffordshire Growth Deal, which saw Government cash ploughed into developments across the county.

The work at Four Ashes saw access to the A449 upgraded with new traffic signals, the bridge over the Stafford and Worcestershire canal has been widened and priority control over the rail bridge will favour incoming traffic to the development.

A new road will link the Gravelly Way roundabout to the development site. Work on the first warehouse is due to start next month, if planning permission is secured, with work completed by next July.

The 50ft tall facility will have a gross internal area of 543,692 sq ft with expansion land to accommodate up to a further 101,139 sq ft.

Bericote says its plans could see up to £120 million invested in the area, once firms have taken the other three logistics units, which measure 270,300 sq ft, 176,400 sq ft and 37,070 sq ft.

Bericote has a track record for delivering large-scale logistics and warehousing projects.

It developed a £40m logistics warehouse for Rolls-Royce at Bognor Regis and this year is building a 563,000 sq ft internet delivery warehouse for online supermarket Ocado at Erith in London.

Colin Godfrey, a partner of Tritax, said: “We are very pleased to be investing in this new logistics facility and UK headquarters which will benefit from significant capital investment by the tenant with the capacity to expand the unit to accommodate future growth plans.

“This is our seventh pre-let forward funded development and the third with Bericote, one of the UK’s leading developers of Big Box assets, following the successful completion of the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Ocado facilities,” he added.

7,000 Shropshire Jobs to be Created

August 10, 2016 by Julie McGrath

More than 7,000 Shropshire Jobs will be created and 2,800 homes built under plans revealed today for our region.

Marches Local Enterprise Partnership has submitted a bid for almost £68 million of Growth Deal funding from Westminster, which would be used for projects across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Herefordshire. A huge number of Shropshire Jobs will be generated as a result.

Projects put forward for funding include the development of Oswestry Innovation Park, a £13.2 million scheme which would see 1,400 jobs created, and Enterprise Telford, a £19 million manufacturing and innovation development estimated to create 1,250 homes and 1,650 full time equivalent jobs.

If successful the funding bid would be matched by more than £75 million from organisations and private sector partners delivering the projects.

The proposal also includes a bid for £7.5 million to support the development of an innovation and enterprise scheme in Newport, £2 million towards the development of the Flaxmill Maltings in Shrewsbury, and £1 million towards the delivery of new homes in Telford, which will be matched with £9 million of private sector investment.

Chairman of the Marches LEP, Graham Wynn OBE, said the bid was supported by its public sector partners, Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council and Herefordshire Council as well as the three area Business Boards.

He said: “We are asking for funding for 11 projects which include not only major infrastructure and shovel-ready schemes, but also proposals to help develop our workforce, by making 1,000 undergraduate and 80 post-graduate places available and investment in IT and digital equipment and training facilities that will benefit over 3,700 young people and apprentices.

“The total cost of these projects is more than £144 million and they will create sustainable private sector jobs, starter homes and access to higher education and training for the people who live and work in the Marches.

“Our bid also sets out our ambition for this enterprising region with a strategy to deliver economic growth through investment in innovation, higher levels skills, housing and business sites.

“We have a record for delivering large-scale projects successfully and our bid has the universal backing of our businesses, our partners and our MPs.”

A decision on funding allocations is expected to be made in the autumn budget statement.

The Marches LEP is one of 38 across England bidding for a slice of the £1.8 billion of Growth Deal funding.

15 New Shropshire Jobs to be Created

July 15, 2016 by Julie McGrath

15 new Shropshire jobs are on their way at one of North Shropshire’s best-known companies, GroContinental, as it works to complete a 75,000 sq ft warehouse on its site.

Whitchurch-based storage and distribution firm Grocontinental is set to create 15 Shropshire jobs at its new warehouse, which will also be the largest the company has built to date.

The site will have space for 32,000 pallets, taking the company’s total storage capacity to 197,000 pallets.

It is anticipated that the new warehouse will be used to house existing customers’ dairy products, mainly cheese. The warehouse is due to be completed in October, and will include high-density racking, dedicated cheese grading and visitor facilities.

Job opportunities will include roles for warehouse operatives, administrators, cheese grading/sampling assistants and stock controllers.

Grocontinental has also launched a recruitment campaign for casual and full-time drivers on a range of flexible shift patterns.

Family-run Grocontinental has continued to invest heavily in the construction of new facilities and the purchase of the vehicles to secure its ongoing growth.

Managing director David Grocott said: “We have experienced an increased level of demand for space and enquiries are ahead of what we’ve seen in previous years.

“Although we are in a challenging and competitive market, our investment programme in quality facilities and equipment have ensured we remain ahead of the game.
