4-Tips from Richard Branson on Business Growth Strategies

Starting your own business can be one of the best decisions you make in life, but it can also lead to some tough situations, and hard decisions to make. Fortunately, Richard Branson has shared some of best advice for growing a business…

“It is no easy task but with the right support and a smart approach, the dream of scaling up your venture from start-up to successful business is in reach,” the Virgin Founder says in a recent SME Advice blog. “If you want to be in business 10 years down the line, you must have a deep understanding of your business, the market it operates in and a great team to support.”

 

Plan for the long-term

Failing to plan for the long-term and thinking about the possible risks and opportunities could make all the difference to the success of your business. “Setting some milestones for you and your team to work towards will keep you motivated and driven,” Branson recommends.

“There will be obstacles to growth you cannot foresee but having a roadmap in place from the get-go will help build structure and focus to decision-making.”

He also suggests putting in place strategies to mitigate any obvious risks to your business model from the start. “If you have a clear vision of where you would like your business to have expanded to after 10 years, plan how you can achieve this.”

 

Stick to your founding principles

Branson has one key piece of advice for when expanding into new territories or creating new products: “Having a uniting them all under one roof is one of the best advantages a business can have. Customers relate to brands and the values it stands for more than the tangible aspects of a product.”

He advises working out your business’ values and principles early on so that you can turn these values into tangible activities your customers can interact with. “Virgin has always been about putting the customer at the heart of everything we do and innovating in industries ripe for disruption. This is what our brand stands for and is applied to every business bearing our brand name.”

 

Gather a great team

Investing in the people you’re working with and trusting them with responsibility is another key ingredient to building a successful business, Branson says. “I learnt this from a very young age. There is little point recruiting great people if you don’t then give them the autonomy to take their role and run with it.

“It also frees you up as the founder to focus less on the day-to-day activities and more on the over-arching objectives laid out in your 10 year roadmap. Over my 40 years in business I have assembled a fantastic team to run the Virgin Group’s day-to-day activities and this has freed me up to spend 80 per cent of my time working with Virgin Unite – the not-for-profit arm of the Virgin Group.”

 

Get the right support

Having a good mentor can help you learn from others’ mistakes and hopefully avoid them, as well as teaching you how best to use the funds you have available, Branson says. “I myself benefited hugely from the words of Sir Freddie Laker when starting Virgin Atlantic. He told me I could never compete with the big advertising budgets of the large airlines and would have to get out there and use myself to promote Virgin Atlantic.”

How M2M and IoT will allow Larger Data Applications

M2M and IoT technology is on the rise.

During the last couple of years, machine-to-machine (M2M) technology has become an integral part of the services offered by global telecom providers and a significant revenue stream for M2M app specialists. They’ve developed comprehensive offerings, designed to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

Meanwhile, the associated business models are beginning to account for new use case concepts and application developments; one of the latest to gain significant traction being the Internet of Things (IoT).

M2M refers to the wireless communications fabric between multiple devices. M2M is a supporting infrastructure for the IoT. M2M performs the connections, and provides the device interfaces, allowing data to be transferred between machines over wireless networks.

 

M2M Market Development

According to the latest worldwide market study by Juniper Research, new in-vehicle infotainment services such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will generate large amounts of new cellular M2M data traffic. Over the next five years, these apps will account for up to 98 percent of all M2M data traffic

Data intensive applications, such as Internet radio, music streaming and information services, will generate approximately 6,000 PB per year by 2021 – that’s the equivalent to over 300 billion hours of music streaming. Moreover, in-vehicle 4G SIMs will provide over-the-air service and subscription updates for drivers and passengers.

The market research found that M2M technology will further the development of autonomous driving systems. Cellular vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology, enabled through M2M, is expected to be the cornerstone of the new system over the coming years.

Consequently, operators will need to ensure that their networks remain able to cope with the projected increases in data traffic, especially in urban areas.

Future smart city systems – such as smart parking and smart intersections – will further drive data usage and the potential strain on mobile networks.

 

Outlook for M2M vertical apps

Meanwhile, the research found that other, less data-hungry M2M modules, would see significant increases in adoption across an array of key verticals, including healthcare, agriculture, smart metering and smart home automation.

“The wider M2M market offers a reprieve from declining traditional voice and messaging revenues. Mobile network operators are now champing at the bit to capitalize on the growth of M2M,” said Sam Barker, senior analyst at Juniper Research.

However, for network operators to maximize their opportunity in this emerging market, they’ll need to evolve beyond merely providing device connectivity, and additionally offer value-added services to their M2M and IoT service customers.

Over 1000 Shropshire Apprenticeships could be generated

A £2.8 million project aimed at creating thousands of new apprenticeships has been launched in Shropshire.

The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership is in the final stages of talks with three bidders to develop Advanced Manufacturing Hubs in three locations around the Marches, which covers Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Herefordshire.

The training centres would support employers in parts of the region where there is limited access to workforce training. The first is expected to open on Bridgnorth’s Stanmore Industrial Estate.

The largest contract, worth more than £1.9m, is led by four partners – Shropshire employers Grainger & Worrall, Classic Motor Cars Ltd and Salop Design & Engineering and training specialist In-Comm Training.

The consortium intends to develop the Marches Institute of Manufacturing and Technology which will deliver training in Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury and aims to create 1,913 apprenticeships.

It would also support 416 businesses and nearly 1,000 bite-sized training courses.

Graham Wynn, chairman of the Marches LEP, said: “Additional capital investment is needed to support the manufacturing sector to develop their skills base, equipping them to maximise future opportunities.

“I am delighted that manufacturing employers have responded to our call for them to take the lead in developing how the skills needs of their workforce can be addressed.

“As a result, we are in the final throes of negotiations to award three contracts to consortiums with numerous private sector employers.

“The first hub to be developed will be at a site in Bridgnorth, and we expect to be able to announce details of the other two training hubs in the coming weeks.”

Matthew Snelson, director at Grainger and Worrall, said: “We are delighted and excited to be part of the consortium of companies who are forming the Marches Institute of Manufacturing and Technology.

“Our objective is to develop engineers of the future, both as apprentices and in our existing workforces. The Institute will support companies large and small across our region, to become more productive, more competitive, and support sustainable growth”.

The training centres are due to open in 2017. Funding for the project was awarded to the LEP via its initial Growth Deal for capital skills projects.

Growth Deals are awarded to LEPs through a competitive bidding process to fund the delivery of projects to boost the local economy.

“The Marches Institute of Manufacturing and Technology is a major step forward for skills provision in the area and gives employers much-needed access to specialist training and state-of-the-art facilities,” added Gareth Jones, managing director of In-Comm Training.

“Industry, and the automotive sector in particular, has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years and we need to ensure we are taking action now to upskill existing members of staff and, importantly, create a pipeline of new engineers to support ambitious expansion plans.”

“It’s time that we reshored provision back to Shropshire and gave firms access to the best employee development opportunities on their doorstep.”

5 Fantastic Ways of Using JavaScript

JavaScript is becoming increasingly used with the progression of modern technology!

If you were a writing code for the web over 10 years ago, it would have been hard to imagine that JavaScript (JS) would ever be used outside of the browser. The journey started when Node.js was first released in 2009, allowing JavaScript to be run on the server-side. Intentionally or not, Node.js opened up JavaScript to all new purposes, such as building robots, controlling drones, and even writing native mobile apps.

Learn about five surprising and creative ways that software developers are using JavaScript to think outside the box.

 

  1. JavaScript and robots 

Recently, more and more developers have been playing around with hardware, using parts such as Arduino boards to build custom robots. Turns out there are groups within the JavaScript community that are really interested in robotics, and they put in a lot of effort into building custom robots with the programming language. One such community is Nodebots. They hold meetups all over the world, where developers can get together, learn more, and hack on robots using JavaScript.

 

  1. Flying drones 

If building robots from scratch isn’t your thing but you’re still interested in controlling stuff in the real world using JavaScript, then why not explore the booming world of Drone Flying? If you’re interested in making your own drone take off using JavaScript, you should know that it doesn’t take much effort. Download the ar-drone NPM package, type a few lines of code, and your drone will be flying in no time!

 

  1. Virtual Reality 

Another technology gaining traction is virtual reality (VR) headsets such as the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear and Google Cardboard. And while writing 3D maps for VR headsets sounds really hard, it doesn’t have to be. There is an open source framework called A-Frame that allows developers to write VR experiences using JavaScript and HTML.  Imagine creating 3D scenes using HTML markup that works across desktop, mobile devices and VR headsets.

 

  1. Native Mobile Apps 

There’s nothing new about writing mobile apps within webviews, but let’s face it, it’s not really native. That’s why projects such as NativeScript and React Native were created. Developers who are already familiar with JS can now write actual native mobile applications for iOS, Android and Windows Phones. This allows apps written in JavaScript to stay blazing fast and able to access all of the native APIs.

If you’ve been considering writing native mobile apps but have been weary of learning a new programming language, fear no more! JS is here to save the day once again.

 

  1. Operating systems 

NodeOS is an operating system written entirely in Javascript (JS). Yes, you read that correctly; somebody wrote an entire operating system using JS. Now, if that hasn’t blown your mind, wait until you find out that the only way to install packages into this operating system is through NPM. The project’s aim is to run on real hardware such as desktops and laptops, as well as cloud providers like Amazon Web Services. What started out as a fun proof-of-concept project has grown into something real.

 

While these five uses  might seem difficult at first, one of the amazing things about JS is that it is still a beginner-friendly language, with an active and helpful community. This is readily apparent on JavaScript.com, a free resource that helps both beginners learn JS and keeps advanced developers up to date with the latest news in the community.

The Difference between ERP & CRM Systems

CRM and ERP – Two systems becoming increasing popular in businesses of all sizes. But what exactly are these systems and how do they differentiate from one another?

Today’s technology gives companies an advantage they have never before had. With the ability to streamline processes and access data in real-time, companies can stay on top of their competition. In addition, today’s data analysis technology allows companies to foresee future events and plan accordingly. These tools, which include both enterprise resource planning software (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM software), give companies the power to control their success in today’s market. While similar at first glance, ERP and CRM platforms are distinctively different. Understanding each platform is critical to your system’s success.

 

What is ERP Software?

First and foremost, ERP software is designed to make a company’s processes more effective and efficient. By better managing all of the key functions of a company – accounting, warehouse, inventory and supply chain – ERP software allows the company to focus on what really matters: the data. With integrated ERP software, employees can update the platform with important information available in real-time to all departments within the company. This integrated technology gives companies a heads-up when problems occur. Without ERP, the sale has the possibility of not being communicated to accounting, production and/or warehouse departments, creating a mess that could result in unmet client expectations.

Ultimately, integration between ERP and CRM ensures that your customers’ expectations, and your company goals, are met. This integration guarantees that all departments in your company are working together. The sales rep can communicate with the accounting, supply and warehouse departments before making the sale. If there are problems, the sales rep will be notified ahead of time. This gives sales reps the ability to close deals with all necessary information and maintain a good name for your company. Without ERP and CRM integration, your company stands the risk of being lost in communication.

Cause Marketing

Cause marketing is a cooperative effort between a for-profit business and a non-profit organisation to mutually promote and benefit from social and other charitable causes. Cause marketing is not to be confused with corporate giving, which is tied to specific tax-deductible donations made by an organization. Cause marketing relationships are “feel goods,” and assure your customers you share their desire to make the world a better place.

Fact: 64% of consumers want corporations to integrate social impact directly into their business models.

 

Direct Selling

Direct selling accomplishes exactly what the name suggests – selling products directly to consumers. In this model, sales agents build face-to-face relationships with individuals by demonstrating and selling products away from retail settings, usually in an individual’s home. The top three direct sellers in 2015 are Amway, Avon and Herbalife.

Fact: The top 3 direct-sell companies averaged $9 billion in sales in 2015.

 

Co-branding and Affinity Marketing

Co-branding is a marketing methodology in which at least two brands join together to promote and sell a single product or service. The brands lend their collective credibility to increase the perception of the product or service’s value, so consumers are willing to pay more at retail. Secondarily, co-branding may dissuade private label manufacturers from copying the product or service.

Fact: In 2014, 6% of all product launches relied on co-branding.

 

Earned Media/PR

Earned media (or “free media”) is publicity that is created through efforts other than paid advertising. It can take a variety of forms – a social media testimonial, word of mouth, a television or radio mention, a newspaper article or editorial – but one thing is constant: earned media is unsolicited and can only be gained organically. It cannot be bought or owned like traditional advertising.

Fact: Nearly 75% of consumers identify earned media as a key influence in purchase decisions.

 

Point-of-Purchase Marketing (POP)

Point-of-Purchase (or, POP) sells to a captive audience – those shoppers already in-store and ready to purchase. Product displays, on-package coupons, shelf talkers that tout product benefits and other attention-getting “sizzle” often sways buying decisions at the shelf by making an offer simply too good – and too visible – to pass up.

Fact: 64% of consumers making unplanned purchases switch brands when a deal is offered in-store.

 

Internet Marketing

Internet marketing, or online marketing, combines web and email to advertise and drive e-commerce sales. Social media platforms may also be included to leverage brand presence and promote products and services. In total, these efforts are typically used in conjunction with traditional advertising formats like radio, television and print.

Fact: 97% of consumers search for businesses online.

 

Paid Media Advertising

Paid media is a tool that companies use to grow their website traffic through paid advertising. One of the most popular methods is pay-per-click (PPC) links. Essentially, a company buys or “sponsors” a link that appears as an ad in search engine results when keywords related to their product or service are searched (this process is commonly known as search engine marketing, or SEM). Every time the ad is clicked, the company pays the search engine (or other third party host site) a small fee for the visitor – a literal “pay per click.”

Fact: 76% of businesses use promoted posts and search engine marketing.

 

Word of Mouth Advertising

Word of mouth advertising is unpaid, organic and oh-so-powerful because those having nice things to say about your product or service generally have nothing to gain from it other than sharing good news. A recommendation from a friend, colleague or family member has built-in credibility, and can spur dozens of leads who anticipate positive experiences with your brand. It’s important to note that word of mouth isn’t strictly verbal. Leveraging online reviews and opinions are equally effective at spreading the word.

Fact: Word of mouth referrals drive $6 trillion in annual consumer spending.

 

Social Networks and Viral Marketing

Social media marketing focuses on providing users with content they find valuable and want to share across their social networks, resulting in increased visibility and traffic. Social media shares of content, videos and images also influence Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) efforts in that they often increase relevancy in search results within social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram and search engines like Google and Yahoo.

Fact: 54% of B2C companies report revenue generated from social media leads.

 

Storytelling

Brand storytelling uses a familiar communication format to engage consumers at an emotional level. Rather than just spew facts and figures, storytelling allows you to weave a memorable tale of who your company is, what you do, how you solve problems, want you value and how you engage and contribute to your community and the public in general.

Fact: Brands that inspire a higher emotional intensity influence consumer purchase intent 3 times more often than less emotionally connected brands.
