I’ve Graduated – What do I do now? 6 reasons why you don’t need to panic!

It’s that time of year again! You have done all the hard work; you have received that really expensive piece of A4 paper that states you have officially entered into the adult world. Employment is looming and inspiration has yet to strike about your future plans, it’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of despair. All of your friends are starting fancy grad schemes or tracking off around Europe, while the only thing you’ve got lined up is a Game of Throne’s Marathon and scheduled panic attacks about the graduate job market, while mum and dad breath down your neck about getting a job!

Your student discount card is about to expire, and if another family member asks you about your career plans then you might just have a breakdown. Sound familiar? These six points might help to reassure you.

1. You’re still young

Those who started a three-year course straight from school will have only just turned 21, so there’s no rush to accept the first 9-5 job that you’re offered. Becky Williams, a recent graduate from Cardiff University, turned down several graduate jobs in favour of continuing with bar work.

She says: “I don’t see the point in accepting a poorly-paid graduate job that I’m not even sure I want to do, just because I’m expected to. I’d rather save up until I’ve had time to decide what I really want to pursue.”

2. Comparing yourself to other people is a waste of time

Just because your housemate has secured their ideal job doesn’t mean that you’re a failure by contrast.

3. You can’t discover who you want to be until you find out who you are

Personalities often change at university, which can be daunting beyond the bubble of campus life. Challenge yourself by experiencing something new, while you still have the chance. Chris Jenkins of Southampton University has just returned from Southeast Asia, in time for his graduation:

“I had wanted to travel and experience different cultures for a while, and the summer before starting work provided that opportunity. It was the best experience of my life. I thoroughly recommend going out into the world and seeing it for yourself, regardless of whether you have a job lined up for your return”, he said.

4. Many successful career-people have ‘fallen into’ their line of work

Recent statistics from the New College of the Humanities found that 19 out of 20 graduates had switched jobs within three years. Be confident enough to accept that your dream career might not be as you had hoped, and devise a new plan according to the aspects that you enjoyed.

5. Your degree won’t go to waste

Deciding that you don’t want to be a psychologist doesn’t necessarily mean that the three years and thousands of pounds spent on a psychology degree was all for nothing – any university education teaches a desirable skill set. According to Prospects, many graduate employers seek degree-level candidates rather than those disciplined in a specific subject.

6. You’re not alone

Marcus Zientek, a careers adviser at Sheffield University, says that many students are unsure of their plans after graduation:

“How uncertain they are does vary, from those who have an interest in a general area of work but have not yet decided about it, to those who describe themselves as not having any ideas at all.

“Panicking doesn’t help and is unnecessary anyway. Don’t let things drift – keep calm and make a plan. Realise that you’re not deciding what to do with the rest of your life, but choosing a good next step for you.”

What to do next – Keep you options open, and get yourself out there!

Graduate careers fairs are an important resource for graduate appointments – even if you don’t get a graduate placement as a direct result of the fair, you’re still taking steps towards your chosen career and moving closer to recruitment in your perfect job.

A suitable graduate placement can be difficult to find, and with the amount of competition vying for graduate appointments you have to use every avenue you can to maximise your chances of finding the right graduate placement for you.

Even if you haven’t finished your course and are still in further study, careers fairs are still worthwhile as a source of information, contacts and interview experience.

Job recruitment careers fairs offer a multitude of benefits to graduates. If you’re ambitious and organised you can get a lot out of a career fair, including;

Honing your interview skills – Even if you aren’t offered a job, talking to prospective employers about graduate appointments gives you valuable confidence and experience of interviews.

Expanding your network – Meeting job recruiters and even fellow graduates helps you build useful contacts for future reference.

Learning industry information – Speaking to job recruitment professionals in your chosen sector is a great way to learn about the industry.

100 Shropshire Jobs to be Created at Multi-Million Pound Hotel

The owner of Telford’s International Centre has released details of a new £12 million hotel in the town, which will create 100 Shropshire Jobs.

Southwater Event Group is planning to build the 100-bedroom hotel, multi-storey car park, restaurant and bar on the land beside the conference venue in the centre of Telford.

It is separate to plans submitted by Telford & Wrekin Council last month for a 68-bedroom hotel on a patch of green space on the Southwater development.

Southwater Event Group, which owns The International Centre, is moving forward with its plans for a 100-bedroomed hotel, a multi-storey car park and a new restaurant and bar on land adjacent to the venue.

The new development is part of the long-term masterplan drawn up in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council in 2009 which led to the creation of the Southwater area of the town creating an enormous number of Shropshire Jobs.

Outline planning permission is already in place and work is set to start later this year.

SEG chief executive Tom Gray said: “Our plans are for a site that is privately owned by our company, and the scale of the project and the investment we’re proposing shows our long-term commitment to Telford.

“The new on-site hotel and extra car parking spaces will help us to accommodate multiple events simultaneously more easily which, in turn, will help to ease any occasional pressure on the surrounding road network while events are in progress.”

Mr Gray said the new multi-storey car park, on the site of the existing ice rink car park, would provide more secure parking for hotel guests, visitors to The International Centre, shoppers using Telford Town Centre and Southwater, and visitors to the ice rink itself.

Southwater Event Group already has two on-site hotels adjacent to The International Centre – The International Hotel, and The Holiday Inn Telford-Ironbridge – as well as the nearby Ramada Telford-Ironbridge Hotel in Forge Gate.

Shropshire jobs will be created as Blueprints are being drawn up

Shropshire jobs will be created as three major development sites are the subject of discussions.

Shropshire Council has confirmed it is talking to the owners of Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury, Clive Barracks at Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, and Ironbridge Power Station in an effort to ensure any development of the sites is “sustainable”. This development will create many Shropshire Jobs should the plans go ahead.

Councillor Malcolm Price, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member responsible for planning, said the developments should include employment and potentially community facilities rather than just housing.

“The council will put the plans together in conjunction with the owners responsible for the sites. We want to maximise the use of these sites.

“The easy avenue for those sites would be just to go for housing, which is not appropriate.

Both Clive and Copthorne Barracks are owned by the Ministry of Defence.

The Tern Hill site is being sold as part of an MoD drive to generate more money, and help the Government provide land for 7,000 homes. It has been anticipated that up to 600 homes could be built at the site, which is currently home to the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment.

The Copthorne site was marketed for sale as a mixed use site last year, but despite several offers the Ministry of Defence decided to take it off the market to develop an outline planning application.

Once that is complete the MoD says it will be offered for sale.

Ironbridge Power Station is owned by energy firm E.ON and ceased production in November after 46 years.

Councillor Price said that comprehensive plans for the future of the sites are essential.

He said: “They will be more sustainable if it is a mixture use site and particularly containing employment.

“We have a lot of housing being built in the county and we need more employment sites which in turn will create more Jobs in Shropshire.

“None of this will be done overnight, we are talking a number of years but we need to start planning for the future and it is an ideal opportunity.”

The cabinet member said the authority would also be looking at the development of other sites across the country to learn about schemes that have been successful.

He said: “It may be with the former military sites there are others around the country where there is some best practice and we can look at whet they are doing and what has worked well.”

A spokesman for the MoD confirmed that discussions are taking place on the future development of the sites.

Speaking about its Copthorne site, Emma Sloper of the MoD said: “The MoD is working with its agents JLL to consider submitting an outline planning application to Shropshire Council for re-development of the site. It will then be marketed later this year or early in 2017.”

On the subject of the Clive Barracks, she said: “The MoD will work closely with the local authority and other interested parties

Roxanne Postle, a spokesman for Uniper which is in charge of Ironbridge Power Station, also confirmed the company is in the process of looking at the potential future uses of the site.

She said: “Our current focus is on the decommissioning phase at Ironbridge Power Station which is due to run until 2017.

“We are beginning the process of exploring future options for the site. These are early stage considerations and further details regarding the future use of the Ironbridge site will be given as appropriate.”

The Ministry of Defence revealed it would sell Copthorne Barracks in 2014 after large areas had been left surplus to requirements following the departure of the 143 Brigade.

When Copthorne Barracks was initially marketed it was advertised as 16 hectares, including a range of buildings, living accommodation, and sports facilities – including sports pitches and tennis courts.

The barracks were built between 1877 and 1881 and initially included a hospital.

It was originally the depot of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.

Construction work on Ironbridge Power Station began in 1962.

The plant was originally designed to run on coal and at full capacity was capable of generating up to 1000MW from two 500MW units.

It was later converted to biomass and the electrical output was reduced to 740MW. But only one of the two units had been operational following a fire in 2014 and capacity was further reduced to 370MW.

There were 130 workers on site when the plant closed last November. A small team of 14 was to be kept on after the shutdown to oversee a 15-month period of the decommissioning of the plant.

The closure of the power station was required by the EU’s Large Combustion Plant Directive.

Shropshire jobs

Clive Barracks in Tern Hill is currently home to the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, but the base is expected to be sold by 2020.

The 1st Battalion, which has been based at the barracks near Market Drayton since 2007, will be forced to move to an as yet unknown location – putting its future in Shropshire in doubt.

The MoD is releasing 10 sites across the country as part of a bid to increase the efficiency of the defence department’s estate, and as a contribution to the Government’s target of releasing enough public sector land for 160,000 homes by 2020.

It is hoped the sales will generate a total of £140 million, which the Government says will be invested into the defence budget.

Announcing the sale, Defence Minister Mark Lancaster said: “Every pound we make by disposing of excess land will be reinvested into a defence budget that keeps Britain safe.

“It will make the defence estate more efficient and better suited to the needs of our armed forces. it will help thousands of people to own their own home.”
